ANCIENT EGYPTIAN MUMMY SAVED BY ENGINEERING & LEGO
University of Cambridge
11/09/2012
The conservation of the cartonnage mummy case was undertaken with the assistance of the Department of Engineering, who helped construct clever frames to support the delicate case during conservation and a new display case with internal supports using LEGO...
LEARNING
WITH LEGO
The University of Edinburgh
By Dr. Dan Swanton
11/11/2016
Lego bricks are a constant presence in my life. I’ve nurtured a love for Lego bricks in my kids and I live with the consequences! Lego bricks and creations litter my home; Christmases and Birthdays involve hours of constructing models; rainy weekends hours are spent building. And in the last year I’ve also started using Lego in some of my teaching…
USING LEGO TO TEACH ACADEMIC WRITING SKILLS
University College London
03/12/2019
Dr Ross Purves is Associate Professor for Music Education at the UCL Institute of Education.
He planned and delivered a ‘LEGO® Serious Play®’ (LSP) inspired practical workshop on academic skills development to students on the MA Music Education programme...

The session was not designed to teach students to develop ‘nuts and bolts’ aspects of academic writing, like referencing, sentence construction etc, but to develop more broadly students’ skills as academic writers...
LEGO
FOR LEARNING
- SERIOUSLY!
Charles Sturt University
09/01/2019
LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP) is an established business development tool used by many major global companies and organisations. The focus is on metaphorical and symbolic representations. Several academic groups have also investigated its use for learning in Higher Education. We have drawn on some key academic literature for this bulletin (Nolan, 2009, James, 2013; James & Brookfield, 2017; Peabody & Noyes, 2017)...

RECONSTRUCTING MYCENAEAN SCRIBES AND ARCHIVES… IN LEGO!
University of Cambridge
CREWS Project
By Dr. Pippa Steele
20/02/2019
Happy International Lego Classicism Day to all our friends and colleagues! In celebration this year, I have been working on something special: a re-imagining of the cover art from John Chadwick’s The Mycenaean World book, in a 3D Lego model. Far from a just-for-fun exercise, this actually has some helpful practical applications in making us question what Mycenaean scribes did at work, and how Linear B archives functioned...
USING LEGO AS A TEACHING AID FOR ACADEMIC ESSAY WRITING IN HIGHER EDUCATION
Dr. Lee Fallin
17/12/2017
I think LEGO bricks are an excellent way to visualise some elements of academic writing and decided this was the perfect time to give it a go. I think this metaphor for academic writing structure can really help students struggling to structure their ideas – or more appropriately, to help students who are overwhelmed with their own ideas and sorting them out...
MODELING THE ART AND ENGINEERING OF ROMAN AQUEDUCTS WITH LEGO BRICKS
By Dr. Gary Robbins
25/10/2014
The original models made with Lego bricks in the exhibit exemplify some of the diversity in design of the ancient Roman aqueducts. Although no attempt is made to be dimensionally correct, the models demonstrate how the aqueducts worked and why their ruins still evoke a sense of awe...
CREATIVE AND RELATIONAL THINKERS: THE POTENTIAL OF LEGO SERIOUS PLAY
University of Birmingham
2017
Through a process of facilitated metaphorical modelling, participants in the LSP process assign meanings to materials they have created in order to illustrate and unlock values, processes, relationships and thinking. The methodology is based on well-established educational theories of social constructivism, constructionism, and reflection...
DESIGNING INNOVATION COURSES IN HIGHER EDUCATION USING LEGO SERIOUS PLAY
International Journal of
Management & Applied Research
By Dr. Lukas Zenk, Mag. Nicole Hynek, Mag. Günther Schreder, Prof. Attila Pausits, Prof. Gerald Steiner and Agnes Zenk
2018
Problems resulting from the increasing complexity of today’s real-world challenges cannot be solved with standard solutions, and the need for innovation competence is more important than ever. In this societal transition, the role of higher education institutions changes, and meta-innovations in which tacit knowledge is transmitted in the context of working life, are key. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a design of an innovation course in higher education in the context of digital entrepreneurship education based almost exclusively on LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP)...

It is well documented that using LEGO bricks is a very powerful educational tool for children, see LEGO Education, however this is not what the Brick Classicists Empire or BCE (previously Lego Classicists) represents. The BCE promotes the often misunderstood serious use of LEGO by tertiary level academics and students, scholars, museum curators and conservators to explore complex ideas, concepts and theories in the study of ancient history, language, archaeology, museum conservation and academic writing. This means that LEGO is used as an engaging and often wry medium or conduit for exploring ideas and deeper understanding. The Lego Group also promotes the use of LEGO bricks for higher education through their LEGO Serious Play programme.
Below I have collected a few examples of papers, blogs, social media posts and video lectures that have explored or applied the more complex use of LEGO.
